Getting ready to head out!!!

Tomorrow, Lauren and I leave for Philadelphia to deliver the work for her solo show at the Slingluff Gallery! We're very excited and I'm extremely proud of Lauren! While we're there, we hope to visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art and, if time allows, the Rodin Museum. Wish us luck!

2011 WVWC Drawing Demo!

Last night I was invited to be a guest lecturer during the Drawing From Life Class at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannnon, WV. Lauren and I were warmly welcomed by the drawing instructor Aaron Nelson and design instructor Chris Cosner. I discussed some of my theories and approaches to drawing the figure, and did a short 25 minute drawing demonstration. Afterward, the students worked from the model as I gave some input and encouragement. The students were very attentive to what I was discussing and responsive to the model. Lauren and I were extremely pleased with their level of skill and focus. Here's some photos of the class.

Adding in my thoughts occassionally.

Some students' work and the model.

Offering some thoughts and encouragement.

My drawing for the demonstration - a 20 minute study of the model's hands.

My drawing (on the left) with some of the students' after class.

Lauren and I were also able to check out Sleeth Gallery where we'll be exhibiting this August with Martha Neaves, an artist from North Carolina. The gallery is extremely nice. The students of Wesleyan are very lucky to have such an impressive art department. Thanks to Aaron and Chris again for the opportunity to share my drawing approach.

Drawing Demo at WVWC

More good news! I've been invited to come again to West Virginia Wesleyan College as a guest lecturer. I'll be doing another drawing demo for the students of the drawing course. I did a similar demo in 2009 and was very pleased with the students' knowledge and participation. Looking forward to this time around as well! I'll post pictures from the demo next week.

Just a reminder, this August I'll be participating in a 3 person show titled "3 Emerging Artists" at Wesleyan's Sleeth Gallery with my wife Lauren Adams (http://laurenadamsart.blogspot.com/) and a North Carolina artist Martha Neaves. The show runs from August 30th to September 22nd.

SOLD! - Zetes and His Brother

Good news! The piece "Zetes and His Brother" has just been sold!

This piece had a pretty successful story even before it was sold. It had been included in the show Lynn and Jennifer Boggess Teaching Artists at the WV State Museum in Charleston, WV. Also, recently it was featured in a Crozier Fine Art advertisement in the popular magazines "Modern Painters" and Art+Auction".

FIRST POST - Recent Work - "Industrial Fragments"

Welcome to my blog!

For my first blog entry, I'm highlighting a series I've just begun called "Industrial Fragments." These new works are representations of ancient sculptural fragments, painted onto industrial polypropylene - polypropylene being a modern tarp-like material used during construction. The works are a mix of the ancient and the contemporary, highlighting their similarites as building materials - many ancient sculptures were smashed and used for construction.

Please let me know your thoughts. Also be sure to check out the rest of my work at http://www.derekoverfield.com/ and http://www.etsy.com/shop/derekoverfieldart
